One bank, multiple departments, many friends!

One bank, multiple departments, many friends!

After an interesting Berenberg internship in the Frankfurt Equity Capital Markets department, I got offered the opportunity to be part of the international graduate programme at Berenberg in London. We started in October 2016 with an intense but also really fun introduction training.

It is great to be part of a grad class with 30 other people, all with the same goal, start a career in investment banking. We had the opportunity to speak with the leading heads of our bank and get to know the different aspects of the bank. Excel trainings, financial modelling trainings as well as general financial trainings prepared us on point for our first rotation. After the introduction training we started our rotation and I became part of the Equity Capital Markets team here in London.

It is very complementary to my day to day role to able to get insights from other grads from their rotations and how it fits into the ECM space. It is great to see familiar faces in almost all departments of the bank. Let me just say, it is very helpful if you know who to call in the New York office.

A holistic perspective on the financial sector

The Berenberg Graduate Programme, with its rotations in various business areas, is certainly a very good opportunity to find out in which part of the financial industry you really want to work later. However, this is only one way to look at the programme, in my opinion. My postgraduate studies in finance and the completion of the three CFA exams during my time at university have strengthened my will to become a portfolio or fund manager later in my career. During an internship at Berenberg’s quantitative equity fund management team, I got to know the firm’s culture. Hence, before I joined the graduate programme in October 2015, I already knew Berenberg and in which part of the industry I would like to end up after the programme. Nonetheless, by rotating within different divisions, I still wanted to get to know the sell-side world as well as the buy-side. For me, getting to know the functioning of the sell-side as well as the interactions of different divisions was very important and I am confident that this is an experience I will benefit from in my future career. Finally, rotations in London and Frankfurt offered me the unique opportunity to build a network of relationships.

A First and Lasting Impression

A First and Lasting Impression

I joined Berenberg after graduating from Oxford in 2016. My first experience of the firm was during my internship the previous summer. I remember being impressed by the bank’s culture, the quality of its people and the flexibility of its program. The Berenberg ethos inspires its employees to work hard and achieve excellence whilst also creating an atmosphere where diversity and sociability are valued. There’s a real sense of camaraderie at all levels amongst the teams, as even the most junior members are offered the opportunity to work with some of the best people in the industry who are genuinely invested in the next generation. Graduates are encouraged to tackle exciting challenges – from individual presentations to CFA examinations – and are assisted throughout the learning process. Even the structure of the program, unique in its flexibility, is designed to support the graduates; giving them the chance to experience several divisions and to find where their skills are best suited. These first impressions – made while an intern – have been manifestly borne out as a graduate. I’m struck daily by the pleasure of working for such a historic, dynamic firm in the heart of the City.

Choosing Flexibility

The Berenberg graduate programme has to be one of the most unique programmes out there. The majority of companies put huge amounts of pressure on graduates to decide on a career role before they have even joined by requiring them to apply to a certain division. Berenberg’s rotational programme gives you the flexibility to experience a number of different divisions before settling on a specific desk, enabling you to identify which particular role best suits you and your skillset. I first started at Berenberg on the 2016 Summer Internship programme where I sat with the Beverages equity research team for eight weeks. I have now joined the International Graduate Programme where I will have the opportunity to rotate across Equity Research, Sales, Fixed Income, Asset Management, ECM and Private Banking. The programme also gives you the chance to do a rotation at one of Berenberg’s offices abroad. This is a rare but very appealing prospect, especially when you are just starting your career, and is something I have always been keen to experience. Berenberg is on a path of rapid expansion and to be a part of a growing business like this is really exciting; I could not recommend it more.
