Uniqueness matters most in today’s banking era

Uniqueness matters most in today’s banking era

Simon Toennessen – Research Analyst, Research

I was interning in Frankfurt, when I heard that Berenberg was aggressively expanding from Hamburg to London. Most people I talked to, including myself, were highly sceptical about the move. Oh, was I wrong!

It’s now been 2 years since I joined Berenberg to head up the Capital Goods research team. My summary in short is as follows: being unique as a quality research house with a commercial attitude clearly sets you apart from competition; strong management is crucial and you appreciate it when you have it; the more you can limit unnecessary regulatory burden for employees the better; investing in people is not common in this industry anymore, yet Berenberg does it and it pays off; creating an attractive working culture has failed at most banks but not here; doing global research properly is such a strong differentiator.

Berenberg is very distinctive in its people, strategy, culture and opportunities. With its success in recent years and its strategic market position I am looking forward to contributing to even greater success going forward. Here you can really make a difference and bring in your own entrepreneurial thinking. It pays off!

After an interesting Berenberg internship in the Frankfurt Equity Capital Markets department, I got offered the opportunity to be part of the international graduate programme at Berenberg in London. We started in October 2016 with an intense but also really fun introduction training.

It is great to be part of a grad class with 30 other people, all with the same goal, start a career in investment banking. We had the opportunity to speak with the leading heads of our bank and get to know the different aspects of the bank. Excel trainings, financial modelling trainings as well as general financial trainings prepared us on point for our first rotation. After the introduction training we started our rotation and I became part of the Equity Capital Markets team here in London.

It is very complementary to my day to day role to able to get insights from other grads from their rotations and how it fits into the ECM space. It is great to see familiar faces in almost all departments of the bank. Let me just say, it is very helpful if you know who to call in the New York office.

Daniel Schaller – IT Trading Development, London

While Berenberg has a long history of over 425 years, it is constantly evolving to embrace new challenges in its business and consequently, within IT.   I joined Berenberg in February 2016 as a software engineer in the Investment Banking IT Department.

After many years of working for a large Investment Bank, I wanted to work for a smaller company, yet still be able to apply my many years of experience and skills in electronic trading IT –  Berenberg allows me to do exactly this. I really enjoy the responsibility, trust and freedom given to me which makes my work not only challenging but also very enjoyable. It also allows me to make valuable contributions and help shape the transformation of Berenberg’s IT Team.

I frequently travel to our Hamburg office and this has allowed me to bridge relationships with our German counterparts and maintain my native German language skills which I thoroughly enjoy!

Natalie Meech – Events, London

I have worked at Berenberg for over 12 years (I was the tenth member of Berenberg London!). I feel very fortunate to have been part of the firm from its early life in London, and to have been able to grow with the Bank to where we both are today.

I head up the events team to organise a comprehensive calendar of events across the UK, Europe and the USA. These can include anything from large four-day conferences to annual football tournaments and various wine tastings, just to name a few.

I have also been able to take on some exciting events which have been fairly unique: a personal highlight was taking 75 clients to the top of the One World Trade Center two weeks before it was open to the public (or even the press); another was arranging for 51 people to cycle across the narrowest part of the UK in just over two days to raise money for our charity partner – no two days are ever the same!

I was part of the original committee to set up our community involvement programme, “BerenbergKids”, which supports underprivileged children and we encourage as many people as possible to get involved in either volunteer days or our annual sporting challenge.  It is a rewarding programme and adds another dynamic to life at Berenberg.

Berenberg has delivered on everything it promised when I joined.

Paul Somers – Sales Trading, London

There is a fantastic culture and ethos throughout the investment bank; entrepreneurial, hard-working, and please excuse the cliche, this really is a ‘one-team’ kind of place.
The trading division has enjoyed massive investment and I can speak on behalf of the team when I say that the success we are enjoying makes it even more of a fun and interesting division to work in.

I travel regularly in North America, as do many colleagues from Europe. Travelling in Europe and North America is an important part of many roles in the investment bank to initiate and develop relationships with clients – Three years ago I was educating our clients on how to spell Berenberg, but now we are so well-established and respected that the hardest part of the trip is finding enough hours in the day to see everybody.

Having worked at many different banks or stockbrokers before Berenberg, I can honestly say I wouldn’t switch this role for anywhere else.

Our team ethos is always ‘what can we improve?’

Becky Orme – Wealth and Asset Management, London

In the seven years that I have worked for the business it has been constantly evolving. The continuous endeavour for excellence ensures that no day is ever the same or uninteresting! Despite being the second oldest bank in the world the working environment within Berenberg is one of innovation and accountability. This culture is reinforced by management giving staff the opportunity and support to develop their knowledge, expand their skill set and take responsibility for evolving the business.

We are an investment content led wealth and asset management business, using the equity, fixed income and economic research published by our investment bank as a competitive advantage to provide our clients with sophisticated and bespoke investment advice.

Our team ethos is always ‘what can we improve?’ and this approach not only applies to the high standard of service we deliver to our clients, many of whom are entrepreneurs, but also to each member of staff and how they can individually develop their expertise and knowledge within Wealth and Asset Management. The atmosphere created by this philosophy together with a strong team culture ensures that driven individuals thrive whilst also maintaining a key focus on client service.

The Berenberg graduate programme has to be one of the most unique programmes out there. The majority of companies put huge amounts of pressure on graduates to decide on a career role before they have even joined by requiring them to apply to a certain division. Berenberg’s rotational programme gives you the flexibility to experience a number of different divisions before settling on a specific desk, enabling you to identify which particular role best suits you and your skillset. I first started at Berenberg on the 2016 Summer Internship programme where I sat with the Beverages equity research team for eight weeks. I have now joined the International Graduate Programme where I will have the opportunity to rotate across Equity Research, Sales, Fixed Income, Asset Management, ECM and Private Banking. The programme also gives you the chance to do a rotation at one of Berenberg’s offices abroad. This is a rare but very appealing prospect, especially when you are just starting your career, and is something I have always been keen to experience. Berenberg is on a path of rapid expansion and to be a part of a growing business like this is really exciting; I could not recommend it more.
